Delhi Airport Sets New Sustainability Benchmarks with Release of DIAL Sustainability Report 2024

New Delhi, May 23, 2025: Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), a GMR Group-led consortium, has today released its Sustainability Report 2024, a comprehensive disclosure that sets a new benchmark for climate action, innovation, and social impact in the Indian aviation industry.

The report outlines DIAL’s transformative journey in embedding sustainability into the heart of its operations, making Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) not just India’s busiest airport, but also its greenest.

Themed “Transforming: Greener, Smarter, Future-Ready,” the 2024 report (https://www.newdelhiairport.in/sustainability-report-2024) showcases DIAL’s bold strides in energy transition, digital innovation, inclusive infrastructure, and stakeholder-led growth, reinforcing its position as a global leader in sustainable aviation.

Key Highlights from the Report:

  • Asia’s First Level 5 Carbon Accredited Airport (Over 40 MPPA): DIAL achieved the highest level under Airports Council International’s (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation, demonstrating unmatched carbon management and emissions reduction practices.

  • 100% Renewable Electricity since June 2022: Delhi Airport continues to operate entirely on net renewable electricity, further solidifying its commitment to a clean energy future.

  • Decarbonization Milestone: Over the last four years, DIAL has achieved a 52% absolute reduction in CO2 emissions and a 36% decrease in CO2 emissions per passenger, alongside a 100% transition to green energy sources.

  • Smarter Infrastructure for Lower Emissions: Infrastructure projects like the Eastern Cross Taxiway and deployment of Taxibots and 22 new Bridge-Mounted Equipment (BMEs) have dramatically cut aircraft taxiing time, fuel usage, and greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Inclusivity in Action: DIAL has implemented the Hidden Disability Sunflower Program, making IGIA a “Sunflower Friendly Airport” with personalized support for persons with non-visible disabilities, in addition to dedicated services for PRMs, senior citizens, and expectant mothers.

  • Water Positive Goals: Delhi Airport is on track to become a water-positive airport through advanced recycling systems, rainwater harvesting, and efficient sanitation infrastructure.

  • Empowering Communities: Through the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, DIAL is actively uplifting underprivileged communities via initiatives in education, vocational training, healthcare, and women’s empowerment-creating sustainable livelihoods across the NCR.

Commenting on the sustainability report, Mr Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO-DIAL, said: “At DIAL, sustainability is not an obligation-it’s our driving force. Our 2024 Sustainability Report reflects the depth of our ambition: to become not just India’s gateway to the world, but a global leader in responsible aviation. We are proud to have achieved ACI’s Level 5 Carbon Accreditation and transitioned to 100% renewable electricity. But our vision goes far beyond compliance-it’s about transforming every facet of airport operations, from digitized passenger journeys and electric ground transport to community resilience and biodiversity conservation. This is a journey we undertake with our partners, employees, passengers, and the communities we serve. Together, we’re building the airport of the future-greener, smarter, and more inclusive.”

With features like biometric e-gates, self-baggage drop, electric ground transport, and sustainable cargo logistics, IGIA is redefining what it means to be a future-ready airport. Every initiative is rooted in DIAL’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) and long-term ESG principles.

As the aviation sector navigates global climate challenges, DIAL is accelerating its investments in innovation, partnerships, and sustainable infrastructure to shape an ecosystem that is not only resilient-but exemplary.
