World's First Net Zero Airport: Delhi's Bold Step Towards Sustainability

16 August 2024

In an era where the urgency of combating global warming dominates global discourse, milestones in sustainable development are celebrated as beacons of hope. Airports, traditionally associated with large carbon footprints due to their role in connecting the world, are stepping up to balance connectivity with responsibility. Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is leading this charge, setting an example for the aviation industry with a groundbreaking achievement.

At COP26, world leaders once again stressed the urgent need to cut global carbon emissions, with the aviation sector identified as a key area for transformation. Airports, essential for economic growth and connectivity, have been recognizing the responsibility to prioritize minimizing their environmental impact. In August 2024, Delhi Airport took a monumental step by securing Level 5 certification from the ACI Airport Carbon Accreditation program. Indira Gandhi International Airport became the first airport in the world in 40 million passenger per year category to achieve NET ZERO CARBON EMISSION STATUS, setting a global benchmark for green aviation.

The Journey to Net Zero

Delhi Airport's journey to this achievement was guided by innovation and a steadfast commitment to sustainability. Originally targeting net zero emissions by 2030, IGIA surpassed this goal ahead of schedule, earning the prestigious Level 5 certification from the Airport Council International's (ACI) Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program. This recognition underscores the airport's exemplary efforts to mitigate both direct and indirect emissions, setting a replicable model for airports worldwide.

Sustainable Innovations Powering the Vision:

  1. Renewable Energy Integration: A 7.84 MW solar power plant supplies clean energy to the airport, preventing approximately 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
  2. Green Buildings: With LEED Gold and IGBC Platinum certifications for Terminal 3 and LEED Platinum Pre-certification for Terminal 1, IGIA's certified green area spans an impressive 7.64 lakh m².
  3. Water Stewardship: Over 350 rainwater-harvesting systems and a zero liquid discharge sewage treatment plant contribute to a water-positive operation.
  4. Operational Efficiency: The Airport Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) system enhances air traffic flow, reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions.
  5. Eco-Friendly Mobility: Electric vehicles and TaxiBots have significantly reduced emissions during aircraft taxiing, complemented by the new Elevated Eastern Cross Taxiway, which cuts CO2 emissions by around 55,000 tonnes annually.
  6. Energy Management: IGIA's ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System certification reflects reduced energy consumption and enhanced efficiency.
